I spent three days hiking the Limestone Way with Hugo during the neverending heatwave

We started at the bottom of the Peak District – Thorpe, and made our way over the brown, dry hills to Matlock Bath. The hills were mostly deserted – not many people walking around the southern peak district in that heat, even on a Sunday.

On the second day we climbed back out of the gorge Matlock Bath sits in, and headed north west to Tideswell, via Youlgreave and Monyash.

Finally, we walked up and out of Tideswell, then down dale and up dale before emerging on the plateau above Castleton and eventually descending Cave Dale.
The closer we got to Castleton, the busier it got. It was quite startling after spending most of the last three days in almost complete isolation (brief foray into Matlock Bath for food aside).
Some poor soul from overseas stopped us right at the top of Cave Dale and asked if she was on the right way to get to Peak Cavern. I don’t think she believed me when I told her it was about 150 metres below her, and the entrance was back down in the village.
