We had a walk on a lovely sunny day from Baslow, up to the lanes above Chatsworth to visit the Hunting Tower and then around the Emperor lake, before following the water down the hillside for a tasty bagel, and the walk back to Baslow.
Chatsworth’s waterworks endlessly fascinate me. There’s channels of irrigation dug out on the moor above the house which feed into several ponds. The water then goes down the hillside – some piped, some via the Sowter stone and then the aquaduct pictured above. Eventually the water gets to the gardens where it powers a variety of water features and fills more ponds before going through a turbine and out to the Derwent.
